"Film is my freedom"

PHILLIPE WITANA - DIRECTOR/WRITER/MOVEMENT SPECIALIST

I grew up on films, they were my escape from the world. Steven Spielberg, Jim Henson films and Disney books were my childhood and allowed my creativity to flow and my mind to go on adventures.

For me directing brought together everything that I had interest for and allows me to express everything I am. My first venture into directing was two years ago with my first short film. Click HERE to watch 'FORTY LICKS'.

I have been in entertainment for almost 20yrs. My career began as a dancer in 2003 where i started with Black Grace Dance Company in New Zealand. My first professional break came way in 2010, becoming a top 4 finalist on the reality dance show 'So You Think You Can Dance'. Following the show i performed for many Australian and international artists such as Beyonce, Will.i.Am, Kylie Minogue, Jason Derulo, Rita Ora, and Timomatic, Jessica Mauboy, Delta Goodrem and more.

In early 2011 I began studying drama at NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Arts) which introduced me in front of the camera as an actor. Through my studies I learned the works of Meisner, Stanislavksy, Strasberg, and Hagen. I took roles in a number of short films like Threaded (Dir: Armand De Saalvy), Aquamarine (Dir: Elizabeth Resonbaum), The Boxer (Dir: Jud Apatow), The film (Dir: Olivier Dressen).

In 2014 I moved to China and launched a film educational platform, connecting writers, directors, cinematographers, actors and other disciplinarians to aspiring filmmakers through workshops and courses. Here I went through most of my film education, whilst working for a creative media house called BLNK Media. I was able to write, direct and assist in a number of TVC's, Music Videos, digital media content and short films. My first short film also gained entry to multiple film festivals through the U.K with my second short film 'THE TRUTH ABOUT ROME' coming out later this year.

Through my time in China I was also movement director and choreographer on a number of Chinese media projects like TVC's for ADIDAS, Peugeot, Huawei, Ubisoft, and live events for Bentley, APAC, China Airlines, and also music videos for Chinese artists RED WOLF, Prince Oli, and Jay Cho.

Other T.V and film credits include Happy Feet 2 (Dir: George Miller), The Great Gatsby (Dir: Baz Lurhman), The Wandering Earth (Dir: Frant Gwo), Goddess (Dir: Mark Lamprell), X Factor, The Voice, Australia's Got Talent, Hey Hey It's Saturday, The Morning Show, Sunrise, Funniest Home Videos, Big Brother, State of Origin.

I have come to a place where all my experience is rolled into one package. My background in dance allows me to create dance inspired content for brands and narrative in short form content that uses dance to convey message. I love exploring human behaviour, our faults and flaws, and telling those stories that show the beautiful contrast.

"For writer-director Phillipe Witana, the film represents an extension of both his love of British cinema as well as the powerful role music played in his own life when he was growing up.

“When I first set out to write this script, I wanted to include music as a central element,” Witana explains".
